From the makers of Neighbors and the co-screenwriter of Crazy rich Asians, joy ride with Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu. Billed as an unabashedly explicit tale of identity and self-discovery, the film focuses on four unlikely friends as they embark on a unique international adventure. When Audrey’s (Park) business trip to Asia goes awry, she enlists the help of Lolo (Cola), her irreverent childhood friend who also happens to be a hot-shot gangster; Kat (Hsu), her colleague, has become a Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their uninhibited, epic experience becomes a journey of connection, friendship, connectedness and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.
joy ride is written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao based on a story by Chevapravatdumrong, Hsiao and Lim. The film is produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Teresa Hsiao and Adele Lim.
“joy ride is a wild ride with so much heart – it perfectly matches the energy and audience that makes South by Southwest so special,” said Lim.
The film also marks the SXSW return of Oscar-nominated Hsu, whose breakthrough role in Everything, everywhere, all at once shot out of a cannon on the opening night of last year’s SXSW. Lionsgate also presided over the satire by Nicolas Cage The unbearable weight of an enormous talent last year with great success.
“joy ride is an absolute blast, with lots of side laughs and a real warmth at its core,” said Claudette Godfrey, SXSW vice president of film and television. “We fell in love with the raucous roller-coaster ride of friendship and self-discovery, and we know our audiences will too.”
“Can’t wait for the SXSW audience to see it joy ride‘ said producer Rogen. “It’s hilarious and original, and it’s always exciting to come back to Austin with great comedy. It’s the only festival where comedy films really have as much prominence as other genres, and I’m grateful for that.”
