Hogwarts legacy sparks speculation about first transgender Harry Potter character

Despite repeated controversy surrounding Harry Potter creator JK Rowling’s views on the transgender community, it appears the wizarding world has introduced its first transgender character.

In Hogwarts Legacy, the open-world role-playing game debuting this Friday, Sirona Ryan is a witch who owns and controls the three broomsticks in the village of Hogsmeade. At one point, the character describes her interaction with a goblin and her own classmates’ misconceptions about her gender.

“We met when I was a waiter here as a student – long before I bought the shop,” says Sirona. “He was hot enough, but we weren’t friends then. His distrust of wizards ran deep… Haven’t seen him in years when he came a few months ago. But he recognized me immediately. That’s more than I can say about some of my own classmates. It took them a while to realize that I was actually a witch, not a wizard.

The game also reportedly allows players to mix and match any variation of the male and female character appearances and voices on offer.

Hogwarts legacy Game director Alan Tew told IGN, “We know our fans fell in love with The Wizarding World, and we believe they fell in love with it for all the right reasons. We know it’s a diverse audience. For us it’s about making sure that the audience that has always dreamed of having this game gets a chance to feel welcome again, that they have a home here and that this is a good place to tell their story tell.”
