James Gunn talks about his childhood and says that the Comic-Con experience was the best weekend of his life

James Gunn he’s had a really fantastic career as a director making some great movies over the years. As you know, he’s starting a big new chapter in his life as he now heads DC Studios for Warner Bros., and the first wave of film projects was announced earlier this week.

Fan reactions to these film and television projects have been mixed. Some people are optimistic about the future of DC movies, and some think Gunn is already dropping the ball. I personally can’t wait to see what Gunn has to offer! I’ve enjoyed his past movies, he knows what makes movies great and is a huge fan like all of us.

When Gunn was recently asked why he took this job to co-run DC Studios, he talked about his childhood, his love of comic books, and shared an experience at Comic-Con that he calls one of the best experiences of his time. life. He explained:

“People have asked me a lot, why did I take this job? I knew there were going to be a lot of setbacks, a lot of problems, but as many of you know, comics are in my blood. These characters are in my blood. I was kind of weird kid who didn’t have many friends and loved comics. I loved DC comics, I loved Marvel comics. I didn’t interact well with my peers and my parents sent me to a psychiatrist when I was 11 to try to figure out what was wrong wrong with me because I never went to school. I stayed home, read comics, wrote and drew comics. And the psychiatrist said to my father, ‘Why don’t you care what your kid does? Because my dad is a real kid from St. Louis, Missouri. He loves Cardinals baseball, he loves the things he didn’t care about. And my father did. And it was really the most wonderful thing my dad ever did was start asking me about comics.”

Gunn then went on to talk about spending a weekend at Comic-Con in Chicago and how it brought him closer to his father:

“He drove me for the weekend to Creation Comic-Con in Chicago, which was probably the best weekend of my life, still to this day I can tell, because my wife isn’t here. But it was amazing. We met Ernie Chan and I talked to all these creative people, and it was just amazing. We bought a lot of comics. The happiest moments of my life are walking up the stairs and seeing my dad reading a copy of Superman. And I wanted to take care of these characters. And we all know that the last few years it’s been a fucked up road for a lot of them, and things haven’t been going well. And I really thought it was a challenge, but I think it’s a chance to create something really wonderful with these characters. I can’t get into politics, I can’t do anything with science. So the only thing I can do for this planet is create stories about love. And that’s what I think we can do the next 8-10 a nni”.

This is just another reason I want to see James Gunn succeed at this! He’s a die-hard fan like all of us and he wants to do these DC characters justice. Let’s see what he does! Chances are that when these movies actually start releasing, fans will love what he and his creative teams deliver!
