When your team doesn’t make it to the Super Bowl, at least you have commercials that are fun to watch and keep you entertained. One of the announcements you are looking forward to this year is a Rakuten commercial that has Alicia Silverstone again as Cher Horowitz from the 1995 comedy classic, In the dark.
The commercial teaser opens with a class of students chatting with each other. The school bell rings, the iconic yellow plaid emerges into frame, and Cher strides down the hallway, a shopping bag in each hand. She reaches to the front of the classroom and puts them down, then turns to the camera and says, “Do not disturb. Your girlfriend is back.
In a recent interview with Variety, Silverstone spoke about the making of the commercial, saying:
“Rakuten came to me with this idea and I thought it was really clever. When I think about Cher and how she’s the most historic movie shopaholic, the idea that she would be able to use this app is the greatest trick ever, get money back on all your purchases. I feel like she would like everyone to know.
The announcement is also a nod to the film’s legacy, as well as a nod to the resurgence of 1990s culture and fashion trends. Did you know when you filmed it? In the dark would it be so successful?
“I haven’t made movies thinking they would be good or bad. I had no idea; I was just acting because I liked it. But then it quickly became clear that she was gaining the upper hand ”.
The habits and values of a 2023 shopaholic, however, seem different from those of a 1995 shopaholic. How might Cher approach shopping today? Silverstone weighed:
“Cher, at the end of the movie, really evolves. She always has compassion, but she really awakens to what matters to her. I think she would buy real echo[-friendly]animal cruelty free clothing.
When asked what she thinks of the revival of ’90s fashion trends, Silverstone admits, “I couldn’t even tell you from what I’m trying to think: What is something from the ’90s?”
After mentioning low-rise jeans as an option that transitioned from the ’90s to the 2000s, Silverstone responded:
“I had all the low rise jeans, that’s for sure… If you’re a woman over 25, you want the high rise jeans… I don’t know if we want the low rise jeans. I don’t know if it will work for us, with older women.
When asked what made it difficult to recapture the energy of that decade’s teen films and shows, Silverstone said:
“Amy Heckerling never wanted to do ‘Clueless 2.’ She was asked so many times and she just refused. She just felt that there was magic in what we were doing. So I don’t know why or how it works… You can have the most amazing cast, the most amazing script, the most amazing director and still those movies sometimes don’t work. So when she does that, it’s extra special.
The 30-second commercial will play Sunday, February 12, during the championship game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. Check out the teaser below:
