Dave Bautista he enjoyed working with the director James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy franchise over the years, and wouldn’t mind reuniting with him on one of the upcoming DC projects that Gunn develops as head of DC Studios.
During a recent interview with CB, Bautista shared that he “didn’t want to be ‘that guy’ congratulating someone on their new position while also trying to slyly pitch a role.” But he said that while he doesn’t expect to get a call from Gunn or be given a role, he would like to “be a part of the DC Universe.”
Now, many fans wanted to see Bautista play the role of Bane, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Bautista has actually talked to Gunn about the possibility of playing Bane in the new DC universe, but that’s not the direction they’re going, Gunn is looking for younger actors. Bautista told Variety:
“I’m not kidding. They were kind of like, ‘Woah, we’re not even casting Bane.’ I was like, ‘I don’t care, I’m playing him.’ I’ve had conversations with James about this, but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting the whole universe, is starting fresh and starting younger and fresher and I think you have to do that. “DC Universe, you have to start from scratch, and I think you have to start with younger actors. You have to start planning for the next 15 years, and I don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that.”
Bautista added that at this point in his career he can’t do Bane justice:
“I have to say I appreciate it because I don’t want to play a character I can’t do justice to. At this point in my career I don’t think I can do Bane justice anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan movies ahead. So, I don’t know if I would be that guy.
I’m sure we’ll see Bautista in a future DC movie one day, and when that happens, it’ll be interesting to see which character he ends up playing. Who would you like to see him play in the new DC cinematic universe?
