Horror is commonly associated with elements of the fantastic, and if you can put your disbelief on hold, some of the best stories will stay with you, haunting your nightmares for the rest of your life. So, this time we look at some of the horror films that are based, and loosely, on some terribly true stories, unfortunately for them.
And how not to start with one of best horror movies based on true events, or more or less, like ‘The Conjuring’, by James Wan. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson play brothers Lorraine and Ed Warren, the most famous demonologists in history, who have investigated some of the most intriguing and terrifying paranormal cases. Deliver us from evil
To continue a little in modernity, we have Scott Derrickson with his horror film supposedly inspired by real events. It is about “Deliver us from evil”, with Eric Bana and Édgar Ramírez, bring to life two officers who investigate a case of apparent demonic possession, something that is related to some strange crimes. Available on Netflix, Claro, Lionsgate+ and Amazon Prime Video.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
another god horror films loosely based on true events It’s Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” The story is inspired by the murders of Ed Gein, however it does not exactly reflect what happened at the hands of this criminal, but adapts it to give life to Leatherface, the terrifying killer with a leather mask, who used part of his victims to create different objects . The Amityville Horror
Another of the cases studied by the Warrens was the one that happened in the late ’70s and which inspired several films, such as “The Amityville Horror”. The story goes that a family had just moved into a new house, where the father began to hear voices encouraging him to kill everyone, and it ended with a massacre of the 6 family members. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
The Curse of Winchester House
In the same vein as haunted houses we have ‘The Curse of Winchester House’, by directors Michael and Peter Spierig, and starring Helen Mirren. The story is set in a Californian estate still today the subject of mysteries, where the daughter of a family and her husband died in strange situations. Available on Apple TV+.
Veronica
And finally, one of the most enigmatic and terrifying cases seen in recent years, that of the young woman from Vallecas, transferred to the big screen by Paco Plaza in ‘Verónica’. The film portrays the death of 18-year-old Estefanía Gutiérrez, who died after using a Ouija board to contact her boyfriend, which ended in her death from heart and lung failure. Available on Netflix.
