The actor is being asked a lot about his past films since returning to the spotlight, and he’s already said he’d love to reprise his role as Short Round in a Indiana Jones spin-off series or movies. Now, he is asked to The Goonies sequel and if he was interested in playing Data again after all these years.
When asked about this in an interview with Deadline, the actor said he’s open, if anything happens:
“For the last 30 years we’ve been trying to do Goonies 2. I wish that had happened when I was young, I thought I needed it to make a career comeback. We had numerous scripts, but none that felt like they could live up to the original.
“Unfortunately we have lost Dick Donner, the captain of our ship. I really don’t know if there will be a Goonies 2, but I’m open to revisiting the character.”
I have no idea if a Goonies the sequel will never happen, but the most recent attempt has come from Adam F. Goldberg, who wrote a screenplay about it before the pandemic. He actually ended up meeting Richard Donner before he died, but we don’t know what came of it. There has been no update.
You can see some teaser art that was created for the Goonies 2 step here. The art mocks one aspect of the film’s plot. It shows a young girl holding the pirate keys to One-Eyed Willy’s treasure standing in front of the iconic bone organ from the original film. But, as you can see, the area has been turned into something of an attraction. There is a sign on a guardrail in front of the girl with a sign that says “Bone Organ, 1632”, while in the upper right corner is a door and a sign above it that says “Willie’s Wild Water Slide”.
Steven Spielbergthe executive producer of the film, had previously been asked about the possibility of the sequel by Josh Gad during The Goonies meeting, and explained that the creative team revisits the idea of a sequel every now and then before dismissing it:
“Chris and Dick and me and Lauren [Shuler Donner] we’ve had a lot of conversations about it and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold up. The problem is the bar that all of you have raised on this genre. I don’t think we could come up with a better idea than The Goonies that we did in the 80s.”
Think this Goonies will the sequel ever take off!? It’s one of those things that fans would like to see happen, but that ship could have sailed.
