The Golden Globes staged their big comeback after the 2022 gala was not televised amid controversy affecting the Foreign Press Association, accused of lack of diversity, favoritism and questionable practices, such as alleged kickbacks. HFPA awards have been devalued and the industry has turned its back, but a year later, the Golden Globes returned to television in its 80th edition with a ceremony from another era, full of stars and great moments.

Incidentally, the evening was marked by a series of powerful and moving speeches and, undoubtedly, one of the best was that of Jennifer Coolidge. The actress, who is currently going through her sweetest professional moment, took to the stage once again to receive an award for playing Tanya McQuoid in ‘The White Lotus.’ After giving us some of the most iconic TV moments of the year, Coolidge gave another speech to remember.in which he made people laugh with his comments (he asked to free the statuette because “I don’t train”), but was also moved to thank the creators who continued to trust her and give her opportunities, Ryan Murphy, Michael Patrick King, Reese Witherspoon and, above all, Mike White, the showrunner of ‘The White Lotus’, who brought tears with his words: “Mike White, you gave me hope. You gave me a fresh start. You changed my life in a million ways. If you don’t know Mike White, here’s what you should know about him: He cares about the world, he cares about people , he’s worried about his friends not having a good time. He’s worried about the animals! He’s truly one of the best people. You make people want to live longer. Mike, I love you to death.”.

Another of the big winners of the night was “All at Once Everywhere”, which continues its journey towards the Oscars with a determined step. Daniels’ film earned Golden Globes for acting for Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. The former is the author of one of the funniest moments of the evening: when NBC tried to cut her speech with music, the kung-fu queen reacted by saying “Shut up! I can hit you. And I mean it, okay?”.
In his speech, Yeoh released a very important message about the obstacles she has encountered in her career, which has spanned 40 years, including racial prejudice, ageism and sexism.. “I turned 60 last year, and I think every woman will understand that. As the days and years and numbers get bigger, it seems the opportunities start to dwindle.”Said the interpreter of ‘Tiger and Dragon’. “And that’s probably where I thought, ‘Come on, girl, you’ve had a really good career. You’ve worked with the best: Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Danny Boyle. So it’s all good.’ And then I got the best gift. : ‘Everything at once everywhere'”.

Ke Huy Quan, who plays Yeoh’s husband in ‘All at once everywhere’, accepted the award for best supporting actor and shared with those present a tribute to Spielberg, who gave him his first role as a child, the unforgettable stopper. “They brought me up so that I never forget where I’m from and always remember who gave me the first chance”said the actor, who returned through the front door after a season away from acting. “It makes me very happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight. When I started my career as a child actor in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’, I felt very lucky to have been cast.. As I got older, I started wondering if that was it, if it was just luck. For many years I feared that I had nothing left to offer. No matter what I did, I would never get over what I did as a kid. But luckily, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid and gave me the chance to try again.”. Quan concluded by thanking those two people, Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert “help me find my answer. You have given me more than I expected”.

Angela Bassett made history by becoming the first Marvel actress to win a major acting award for an MCU film. In her speech, the actress who plays Regina Ramonda in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, thanked the fans and remembered Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in 2020: “I am grateful to the Foreign Press Association for giving me this honor for ‘Wakanda Forever.’ We have embarked on this journey together with love. We cry, we love, we heal. And we will be surrounded by the light and spirit of Chadwick Boseman every day.. As for Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and giving us so much love. We just made history with this nomination and this award. It belongs to all of you, to all of us.”.
Standing ovations for Steven Spielberg and Ryan Murphy
Other notable speeches of the night included Austin Butler, who won Best Actor in a Drama for “Elvis” and returned to generate internet comments for his voice, since it seems he is still possessed by the spirit of the King of Rock; Evan Peters, who won for his chilling work on ‘DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ and wish “Sincerely” which, despite being a difficult series to do and to see, “something good came out of it”; and Eddie Murphy, who received the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award and joked about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Finally, we have to highlight two of Hollywood’s most prominent creators, Steven Spielberg and Ryan Murphy. The former collected the awards for best director and best film (drama) for ‘Los Fabelmans’, and in his speech he summed up the personal journey that led him to his latest film: “Everything I’ve done up to this point has finally made me honest that it’s not easy being a kid. Everyone sees me as a success story, but no one really knows who we are until we’re brave enough to tell everyone.”.

Murphy, for his part, received the Carol Burnett Award in honor of his career (which includes, among other things, such hits as “Glee”, “American Horror Story” and “Dahmer”). The producer set aside some of her onstage time so MJ Rodriguez would get the ovation she couldn’t get last year when she made history by becoming the first trans woman to win a Golden Globe for the work. of her in ‘Pose’. Mashed potato he thanked the other interpreters who worked with him and sent a message of hope and motivation to the LGBTQ+ community: “I devoted most of my speech tonight to these wonderful actors to convey a sense of hope and progress. When I was a kid in the 70s watching Carol Burnett’s show, I’ve never seen someone like me take in hand an award or be a character in a show. It’s tough being an LGBTQ kid in America. In fact, all over the world, then as now. […] They often tell you that you will never become anything. You have to hide your life to survive. But for those guys watching this, I offer MJ Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Niecy Nash, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope as examples of possibilities. There is a way forward, use them as your North Stars”.
