In its fourth week on the bill, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ shows no signs of slowing down. In contrast, the sequel directed by James Cameron triumphed big again at the Three Kings weekend, climbing 61% and adding €4.53m more to his total (nearly two more than last week!), according to data from Comscore. The blockbuster produced by 20th Century Studios and distributed by Disney, which opens 2023 with a bang, He already has 35.88 million euros collected in our country. Crazy.

Nobody touches the Na’vi, which is why in the last month few have dared to launch major releases to compete with it. However, there are other proposals that have conquered the public, specifically two who dueled for second place (since the first is unattainable). Two films that are aimed at totally different audiences, ‘M3GAN’, the new Blumhouse horror film, which is becoming a viral phenomenon, and ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, the sequel to the spin-off of ‘ Shrek’, which won over critics.
In this close battle, it is the animated film from DreamWorks which wins with €917.39 in its third week, which also represents a 43% increase from the previous week, which is logical when you take into account the fact that the week of Three Kings is a traditionally family season in which parents usually choose animated films to watch with their children. ‘M3GAN’ has to settle for third place on its opening weekend in Spain, with €811,634. However, it collects on average per theatre, with 2,714 euros in 299 theatres, against 2,414 for ‘Puss in Boots’ in 380. In any case, both are films distributed by Universal Pictures, so it all goes into the same bag.
‘Operation Fortune: The Great Hoax’, the new action film by Guy Ritchie, strongly enters the fourth place, reaching 525,078 euros and an average of 1,660 euros in 317 cinemas in its first weekend, which once again demonstrates the attraction that Jason Statham has in our country. And another actor who really likes it is Tom Hanks, who is in fifth place with ‘The Worst Neighbor in the World’ and earns 433,470 euros in the second week, for a total of 1.32 million euros.
‘A todo tren 2’ drops from 4 to 6, but continues to do very well after six weeks on the bill, adding 333,113 euros to an accumulated figure that already reaches 5.65 million. ‘Pray for the Devil’ occupies number 7 with €163,848 more, for a total of €683,003 in two weeks. A month after the Goyas, ‘As bestas’ continues among the most watched films after nine weeks and already has 3.84 million in box office. UK’s ‘Living’ closes the Top 10, which gets 117,874 at its premiere, boosted by Oscar bells for its lead, Bill Nighy, and Spanish animated family film ‘Inspector Sun and the Widow’s Curse nera’ with around a fair €62,380.

Outside the Top 10, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody drops from 8 to 11. The Whitney Houston biopic isn’t doing as well as expected, with €423,102 in three weeks. On the contrary, we must highlight the success of ‘Aftersun’, one of the favorites of the awards season, which, being present in just 32 cinemas, continues to generate excellent averages (1,035 euros) and has 191,825 euros after four weeks on the bill. The film starring Paul Mescal managed to climb from 14 to 12, probably thanks to word of mouth. Finally, ‘The menu’ runs from 11 to 14, but 20th Century Studios can find itself with a song in its teeth, as its acclaimed thriller has reached almost a million and a half in our country, before reaching Disney+ next 18 from January.
With the arrival of the anticipated new releases and the promotion of family cinema in Reyes, the cumulative box office corresponding to the 20 most watched films in Spain has almost doubled, from 4.71 million last weekend to an excellent 8.59 million the last weekend of the Christmas holidays. Once again – and above all – thanks to James Cameron’s blue aliens, an unstoppable phenomenon.
The Na’vi, at ease for another week
With $1.713 million raised worldwide as of this writing, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ is already the highest-grossing film of 2022 and the seventh in history. And it seems that the box office will continue to turn blue next week, because once again there are no new releases that can even remotely compare. Among the launches of January 13, the following stand out: the new by the controversial Eduardo Casanova, ‘La piedad’the peculiar British comedy “Brian and Charles”, the period drama “Emily” (about the writer Emily Brönte), the acclaimed festival-goer “Holy Spider” or the romantic comedy “The Book of Love”, with Sam Claflin and Veronica Echo.
