It was recently reported that director Francis Ford Coppola Megalopolis film production was in complete shambles. Insiders said it was “absolute madness” with reports from the director firing the entire visual effects department and a ballooning budget. Well, Coppola is saying that these reports are not true and that the production is perfectly fine.

In an interview with Deadline, the director shared, “I love my cast, I love what I get every day, I’m on schedule and on budget, and that’s what’s important to me.”

Coppola admitted there was some turnover and explained that eliminating the VFX department during production is something he designed to keep the film within budget: “It was basically about managing costs.” Bradley Rubin (The Mandalorian, Westworld) was hired as the film’s production designer and is in charge of all of this.

Coppola went on to say, “I have never worked on a film where I was so happy with the cast. I am so happy with the look and that we are so on schedule. These reports never say who these sources are. To them I say, ha, ha, wait and see. Because this is a beautiful film and above all because the cast is fantastic. I’ve never liked working with a cast so hardworking and so willing to seek out the unconventional, to find hidden solutions. It’s exciting to work with these actors and the cinematography is everything I could have hoped for. The newspapers are great. So if we’re on time, and I love the actors and the look is great, I don’t know what they’re talking about here.”

Adam Driver, who stars in the film, also responded to this news: “I would like to respond briefly to The Hollywood Reporter article published on Monday, January 9th. All right here! Not sure what set you’re talking about! I don’t recognize that! I’ve been on chaotic sets and this is anything but.

He went on to say:

“The environment created by Francis is one of concentration and inspiration. As of right now, we’re on schedule, making our day and honestly, it was one of the best shooting experiences I’ve had. Our crew is quick and inventive, our costume department is perfect, the actors are incredible and hard-working, and Francis is one of the most insightful and thoughtful people to work with. I’m very proud to be shooting this film with him and with them, and while I haven’t interviewed everyone, I can confidently say that this is the general attitude on set.

“Yes, it’s true that the art department quit and the visual effects were fired. Not all departments find cohesion in films and rather than suffer and make decisions that leave a lasting impression on the film, people quit, get fired or go their separate ways. It’s a shame when it happens, but this production is not out of pocket compared to other productions; especially to the point where it deserves an article about us descending into chaos. This characterization is imprecise.

“No one signed up for this film expecting the process to be conventional. We expected the opposite in the quest to create something unique. The only craziness I’ve observed is that more productions aren’t allowed to be so creatively wild and focused on experimentation, precisely because someone else is paying for it. It’s an effort and a risk by Francis that I think should be applauded, not publicly misrepresented as problematic.”

Coppolla isn’t bothered by the reports, he’s just moving forward and trying to make the best film possible by saying, “We’re going to finish the film in spring 2023, and we’re totally on schedule, which is hard to do on a big picture. I don’t know how many movies can tell in eight weeks, but we are and that’s a fact.

The director then shared the film’s distribution goals saying, “I’m interested in a theatrical and IMAX release and I’m excited by the possibility that for the first time in history a film could open on the same day anywhere in the world.” And that’s my goal.”

Discussing the story she wanted to tell, she explains: “My first goal was to make a love story with the heart, but then you realize it’s about love and disloyalty and every aspect of human life. It echoes many other aspects of human life, such as our planet in danger, but ultimately it is a very optimistic film that has faith in the human ability to heal any problem that is presented to us.

He then concluded by sharing his satisfaction with the film: “My cast is a wonderful group of actors, who are doing a wonderful job and there is not a case where I wish I had chosen any other way. Every night I go to the newspapers and I understand why I’m going through all this. I love what I see, every night. The look of the film is exactly what I dreamed of.”

Well that sounds great! I am so happy to see that Coppola is 100% on track with his ambitious $120 million epic film and that it has been such a positive and positive producing experience for him. I’m excited to see how it turns out!

The film tells the story of an architect who dreams of a utopian version of New York in the near future and his battle with the conservative mayor, who has other ideas about the city. Contained within the epic are a myriad of storylines and characters. “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its social problems in this epic story of political ambition.”

The film is the protagonist Adam Driver, Shia LaBeouf, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzmann, Laurence Fishburne, Grace Vander Waal, Kathryn Hunter, James Remar, Thalia Shire, Dustin Hoffmann, Cloe Fineman (Saturday night live), Isabelle Kusman (Licorice pizza), DB Sweeney (Fire in the sky), and newcomer Bailey Ives.
