Director Red Alert Rawson Marshall Thurber developed a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series over the past year, and Paramount+ has officially given it a series order. Thurber wrote the pilot for the series and is also set to direct the first episode.
There are no official details yet on the project, but there have been rumors in the past that the story “might be” centered around a popular drow ranger character called Drizzt Do’Urden. It has been speculated that the show may focus on Drizzt’s “early life growing up in the drow city of Menzoberranzan, also known as the City of Spiders.”
“Born” in the 1980s, Drizzt is as relevant today as he was then and continues to be a hero to fans old and new who discover or rediscover him. He may not have the greatest sword, but he does what’s right, even when it’s the hardest choice.
Paramount+ has given the show an eight-episode order and is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne serving as the lead studio.
The news comes as Paramount Pictures and eOne are preparing to release the highly anticipated live-action film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on March 31st, which sounds like a lot of fun! That film comes from directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Gilio.
As a D&D fan, I really hope these projects do the franchise justice. Right now there’s a lot of fan backlash against the changes Hasbro is making with the epic fantasy RPG. I wonder if that will sour what Paramount is trying to do with these film and TV adaptations.
