With 40 years in the industry, James Cameron has gone on to become one of, if not the greatest, most successful directors of all time. Great titles like ‘Avatar’, ‘Aliens’ or ‘Titanic’ bear his name, however, and like any director, he had several films that were never released and had all the makings of becoming absolute masterpieces.

Even though Robert Rodriguez did a decent job with ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ this was one of the James Cameron films that could never be released. Despite this, he is credited as producer and co-writer of the film, from which, surely, something totally different would have come out in the hands of Cameron, who wanted to turn it into a complete trilogy.

Dungeons and Dragons

The famous board game that became more relevant with the premiere of ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’, was a James Cameron’s project that could have resulted in a masterpieceUnlike the 2000 film, which ended up being a disaster. The game’s publisher and FOX, the company the director was working for at the time, could not reach an agreement and the project fell apart.

It is not for nothing that David Fincher ended up in Netflix’s ‘Love Death + Robots’, since the original idea was to adapt the animated saga of ‘Heavy Metal’, but for different reasons the project fell apart. At its inception, this title would have had characters such as Guillermo del Toro, Zack Snyder and Gore Verbinski among its ranks, but after a year of production, the story had no continuation and everyone left their jobs.

Outright lies

Like a master of sequels that he is James Cameron, seized on the second part of one of his most acclaimed cult films, ‘True Lies’, a masterpiece in which Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis starred. But the event of September 11, 2001 changed Cameron’s mind about the terrorist attacks and the story was shelved forever.

Jurassic Park

Long before Steven Spielberg was the director chosen for ‘Jurassic Park’, James Cameron wanted to adapt the novel by Michael Crichton. That’s when his partner bought the rights, just hours after Cameron had considered doing so. Either way, it turned out to be a cinematic masterpiece, which it continues to deliver over the years.

Spiderman

Before finding the last one, there are some projects that James Cameron never got to make, such as Andrei Tarkovsky’s ‘Solaris’, ‘Terminator 3’ or ‘Amazing Journey’, a novel by Isaac Asimov. Cameron’s ‘Spider-Man’ was one of the most famous projects ever released in the history of cinema, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Peter Parker, which has one of the most compelling backstories of a project ever.
