Grammy-winning singer Cage The Elephant’s Matt Shultz has posted $10,000 bail and is awaiting trial in New York City in February on charges of illegal possession of two weapons.
Shultz was arrested Thursday night with two loaded guns at a hotel in Lower Manhattan. The police were called when someone saw him pull a gun from his pocket. According to the police, the 39-year-old was drunk.
He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon after police found the guns in his room at the Bowery Hotel. Prosecutors said they also seized 11 Polaroids of the guns, including some that “point to a hand holding the firearm.”
In addition, six handwritten notes were found, “one of which essentially read, ‘I will protect myself if attacked,'” prosecutors said.
Cage the Elephant is known from the 2015 album tell me i’m beautiful. The band won Best Rock Album at the Grammys in 2020 and 2017, and Best Alternative Music Album in 2015.
Shultz’s attorney told the court the weapons were legally purchased and registered, but not in New York.
The singer is due to appear in court on February 22.
