Earlier this week, DC Studios is co-CEO James Gunn addressed the “loud and rude” DC trolls, saying that their “disrespectful proclamations will never, ever affect our actions.” He shared his feelings about him with the fan community saying the decisions they are making regarding their DC plans “are made with a true heart and integrity and always with the story in mind.”
Now Suicide squad director David Ayer he’s sharing his thoughts on negative DC fandom, and has a very different take on it. In response to Gunn’s statement, Ayer appears to be praising DC fans for their negativity. He said:
“I’ve always seen negativity as a testament to the power of these characters. There’s something deeply mythological about them that ignites passion on both sides.”
Ayer has a frustrating relationship with Warner Bros. because his Suicide squad the film is not what he had imagined. I can see why he would support some of the negative fandom because so many of the fans fought for him and for the film’s true vision of him. As for its cut of Suicide squadsaid previously:
“I put my life into Suicide Squad. I accomplished something amazing. My cut is an intricate and emotional journey with some bad people who are shit and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my film Read And My Cut is not the 10 Week Director’s Cut – it’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith that builds on the incredible work of John Gilroy. It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, without a only radio song in all. It’s got traditional character arcs, amazing performances, solid third-act resolution. A handful of people saw it.”
It’s still a shame we’ll never get to see Ayer’s cut Suicide squad. It’s interesting to see how different filmmakers view and handle fans of big franchises like these. For better or for worse, fans are madly passionate about the things they love!
I’ve always seen the negativity as a testament to the power of these characters. There is something deeply mythological about them that ignites passion on both sides. https://t.co/FmJyOlh5GB
