The 44-year-old former Hollyoaks player shared on Instagram on Friday that he was the victim of an elaborate instant payment scam that left him feeling “stupid and embarrassed.”

Man, visibly moved, said in the video: “So I have to admit something that made me feel really stupid and embarrassed. I’m sure everyone will scare me, but this won’t happen to anyone else, so here we go.
“I got scammed with instant payment scam this week.”

He continued: “I’ll preface all this by saying that I know I’m not the smartest dude in the entire repertoire, but I consider myself relatively smart, but totally scammed.
Basically, on Tuesday I got a message from Barclay’s bank saying there was suspicious activity on my account and that someone from the fraud investigation team would call me to discuss it. “
“I got a call from a number 0845 and the guy Martin called, ‘I’m calling from Barclay’s fraud department, asking the security questions I always ask.
“While I was on the phone with him on my laptop, I even went to Barclay’s website to check the number he was calling, and it was actually Barclay’s scam number.”

Adam, who rose to fame on Coronation Street, continued, “He explained to me a long time ago that someone had gone into the Crewe branch and was trying to withdraw money. He said the only way that person could do that was to use my driver’s license, passport and signature.

“So I hung up, logged into my bank account, everything seemed fine. I got the callback and immediately borrowed one of my friend’s phones to call this number I found on the site, and everything was fine.
“He said what he thought was going on was a bit of an inside job, they had seen CCTV footage of a little boy, obviously not me, he went to the counter and asked people out for them. Queue goes in and was not asked to give his passport when he arrived.

“He just said that they didn’t mention these two people, but that there must have been a relationship because of the size of the withdrawal.”
The man fought back tears as he continued to remember his ordeal and added, “Again, I was really nervous.
“They told me to make a fake payment and what they’re going to do is activate a member of the fraud department. I said no, I didn’t want to.
“They told me to close the account, so I went back to my account and as if that wasn’t enough, the money was gone.”

“I got totally scammed this week by some scammers pretending to be @barclaysuk.
“I was 100% sure it was the bank, they were helping me and I wasn’t transferring money or giving details. Unfortunately the first one was not correct… they managed to copy everything I thought was safe… they knew everything about me and my background at the bank…
“I know we all thought we knew what to do or how to react… but honestly, I never knew the stress this caused during the scam… and the embarrassment I feel now.
“I can’t imagine how I would protect you because I thought I was doing everything right…but remember that there are people out there who know exactly how to play with the system. Stay safe x.”
