Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye, who sang and played drums on “Don’t Turn Around”, “Shine” and other hits by British reggae group Aswad, passed away on 2 September. He was 62 years old.
The band announced his death on their Instagram page, but gave no details. “It is with deep sorrow and profound loss that we must announce the death of our brother, Angus ‘Drum’ Gay,” he reads in the post (see here). “Dram was loved and respected by his family, friends and colleagues. [He] He left us to join our ancestors and leaves a huge void, both personally and professionally. “
Gaye and his bandmates Tony Robinson and Brinsley Dan Forde met at Holland Park School in London and released several singles that topped the UK charts before exploding with “Don’t Turn Around” in 1988 (see the next video). The upbeat song, performed by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren, reached number 1 in the UK and New Zealand and reached the top 10 in other countries, including Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands, but failed to rank in the Billboard Hot 100. in the United States.
Backed by the international success of the then united reggae group UB40, the single was taken from Aswad’s twelfth album. distant thunder which reached number 10 in the UK and went gold there. The LP beat the Billboard 200 in the United States.
Aswad, a proper name meaning “black” in Arabic, followed Don’t Turn Around with “Give a Little Love” later in 1988, reaching number 11 in the UK and another top 10 hit “” Shine ” in 1994. The song also reached the top 10 in Ireland.
The band released more than 20 studio albums from its 1976 debut through 2009. alaj Block, 10 of them made it to the UK charts.
Born on September 24, 1959, Gay has also produced songs for artists including the Swedish band Ace of Base, whose 1994 recording of “Don’t Turn Around” became an international success.
