50-year-old Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes (pictured) revealed his secret battle with mental illness while at the height of his fame in a column for the Huff Post this week.

“Savage Garden was on the verge of gaining worldwide fame and would sell 26 million albums, two Billboard #1 singles and travel the world.”

“Still, no one knew that I was so unhappy, and I had almost no secrets that would have destroyed me emotionally and brought me to the verge of suicide at the height of my fame.”

This comes after Darren had previously told the Sun reporter that he was “deeply regretted” not being able to express his true self.

Savage Garden singer admitted

The Savage Garden singer admitted that she “masked a rapidly rising depression” when she rose to prominence in the 1990s.

“When I was at the height of my Savage Garden fame, I felt great sadness about my relationship with my sexuality and my career.”

“The public never knew exactly who I was. This saddened me deeply,” he added.

Darren came to light when she married her partner Richard Cullen in England in 2006.

“As a child I began to experience the full power of a self-contained mental illness… No one would know when they were looking at me,” he wrote.

Consisting of Darren and guitarist Daniel Jones, Savage Garden was formed in 1993 and produced the series No. Like 1 To the Moon and Back and Truly Madly Deeply.

The group disbanded in 2001. While Darren pursued his solo career, Daniel married former Hi-5 star Kathleen De Leon.

It is unlikely that Savage Garden will ever be reunited, as the duo’s “friendship is over”.

It was added to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia registration list in 2019 for its cultural significance.
