Why was the Vampire Academy being canceled after one season

Fantasy drama “Academy of Vampires” would be the second attempt to breathe new life into the Cultboek series Richelle of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the screen.

This time the project had very strong starting positions: show grant Julie Pli (“Vampire Diaries”), a new cast and the budget for peacock streaming. But even this didn’t help. Four months after the premiere it became clear: the audience will not see the second season.

How the new “Vampire Academy” appeared

In 2021, Peacock ordered an adjustment of 10 episodes inspired by all six novels of the original series. The plot was transferred to 1997 and the heroines were Rose Hathaway (Sisi Stringer), a student, and Lissa Dragomir (Daniela Nieva), a princess from the Roya van Moroev. Instead of a direct film adjustment of a separate book, the makers gathered events, characters and elements of Laura from all the novels that add new lines.

The premiere took place on September 15, 2022 and the reviews of critics were much warmer than the film 2014 with Danila Kozlovsky: the series received 77% of the positive reviews against 17% of the film on Rotten Tomatoes.

Why the series was closed

The official reason is an insufficient audience. According to Deadline, the Peacock leadership was a fairly creative direction of the show, but the reviews were too low to justify the costs.

Short about failure in numbers and facts:

  • Premiere: September 15, 2022, Peacock.
  • Cancellation: January 2023, in just 4 months.
  • Number of seasons: 1 (10 episodes).
  • Critical assessment: 77% on rotten tomatoes.
  • Sales abroad: rights sold in more than 100 countries.
  • The main reason for the closure: the low interest of the public in the home market.

After closing, Universal Television tried to find a new platform for the series, taking into account good international sales.

In 2023, however, Julie Plong reported that the actors had expired and that the team ‘did what she could do’. Her colleague Margarit Makintire confirmed: “I don’t see any way ahead.”

Fans still hope for the film adjustment of the blood book Spin-Off (Bloodlines), but so far there is no news.
