After almost ten years of expectation, the co -author of Sherlock Mark Gatisse made clear: the return of the series can no longer hope.
At the Global Series Festival in Italy, Gatissa was again asked about continuation – and this time the answer sounded final:
“It is important to admit that time comes and leaves. Sometimes something exists and then ends and there is nothing wrong with it. It can be very difficult to return.”
Since the fourth season was released in 2017, rumors have not disappeared around Sherlock. The actors and the authors have repeatedly said that they could not mind returning if the graphs coincide and a worthy script appeared. But now it is clear that waiting for fans is no longer worth it.
The series was released in 2010 and immediately became a hit. Modern adaptation of Conan Doyle Stories, a daring pace, tense direction and the game of Benedict Cumberbatch changed Sherlock to one of the most important British television projects of the decade. But the last season was controversial. A lot of criticism, blurry focus, the feeling that the series was exhausted. Even fans admitted: maybe it was worth stopping earlier.

Cumberbatch himself literally said in January of this year that he would agree in just one case to return to the role of Sherlock:
“It should be better than everything we did before. If we return, than just with something very open.”
Despite the fact that both Cumberbatch and Freeman have not rejected the possibility of continuing, the time continues – and the actors are working on other projects. And the idea of returning more and more is similar to a nostalgic gesture, and not a creative necessity. The fifth season of Sherlock will apparently remain a fandroom.
