It was a very personal moment.
The Avengers became a major event in 2012 and led to the superheroes as we know them today.
Despite the abundance of heroes, the creators managed to take the time to reveal them all, without extending the running time.
And yet Joss Whedon still regrets leaving out one small, but in his opinion important, scene.
We’re talking about just 50 seconds.
Steve Rogers is sitting in a cafe across from Stark Tower, sketching. When a waitress approaches him and starts flirting, Cap can barely figure out what’s what. That’s when Stan Lee walks in and says:
“Just her phone number, asshole.”
Whedon was deeply disappointed that the clip was not included in the theatrical release of the comic book film. And there are three reasons for that.
- First, he had to leave material behind again with Ashley Johnson, with whom he had collaborated more than once.

- Secondly, he and many others liked this version of the cameo with Lee much better.
- Third, the decision to remove it weakened the Captain America storyline.
“You know, these moments seemed very personal to me,” the director lamented in an interview.
Fortunately, the filmmakers still had five films left to develop the character and bring his story to a fitting conclusion.
