Explaining the Ending of ‘The Perfect Couple’: Who Is the Killer in the Show? (Spoilers!)

Netflix’s detective miniseries The Perfect Match was one of September’s biggest premieres, and it’s easy to see why. Susanne Bier’s project starred Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Isabelle Adjani, Jack Reynor, and Dakota Fanning, and the entire plot was packed into just 6 episodes—an ideal cast and duration for binge-watching.

The plot revolves around the wealthy Winbury family, whose members are preparing for a wedding. The Greer family matriarch, Harrison Winbury, a famous mystery author, is already looking forward to another successful social event. But the holiday is spoiled by one surprise: the guests find the body of Merritt Monaco, the maid of honor.

It soon becomes clear that nearly every member of the family, including Greer herself, had a motive to kill Merritt. Merritt was sleeping with her husband, and Greer realized this before the murder.

Fans speculated about the killer’s true identity throughout the series, suspecting Greer or her husband, but the writers still managed to shock even the most astute fans – Merritt was murdered by Abby Winbury, Thomas’ wife.

Fanning’s character drugged Merritt with sleeping pills and then drowned her in the bay in cold blood. And her motive was the most banal: money.

The fact is that the trust fund containing the Winbury clan’s money would not be in the hands of the Greer sons (and their wives) until the eldest family member turned 18. Abby learned that Merritt had become pregnant by Greer’s husband, and immediately realized that she would have to wait another 18 years for money instead of just a few months.

The writers never explained how Abby found out Merritt was pregnant, leaving fans as disappointed as possible about the true identity of the killer. Abby’s motive seemed strange to almost all viewers, so Kinopoisk users rightly rated “The Perfect Couple” as average 6.8 points.
