The need for invention is cunning, you say?
The 1990s saw an era of experimentation and innovation in cinema, with directors making films on a limited budget that had longevity.
We have collected 10 movies that were made for pennies and that will still win hearts even in 2024. Original stories, a non-standard approach to filming and creativity in working with not the most expensive special effects made them unique. Paranoia in a confined space, the living dead and underground worms: some will say that this is garbage, while others will argue that it is a classic. Everyone will be right.

The cheapest film in our selection, Robert Rodriguez’s The Music Man, has become a legend of low-budget cinema.
The film, shot for just $7,000 – $7,225 to be exact – surprised with its production quality and inventiveness. Rodriguez used minimalist methods: instead of expensive equipment, he often settled for a simple camera and filmed many of the stunts himself.
In order to save on salaries, many actors played multiple roles at the same time. It seems that this is a path to nowhere, but “The Musician” received high ratings from viewers: 6.9 on Kinopoisk and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. This film became proof that the most important thing in cinema is not the budget, but talent and a creative approach.
Rodriguez knows this as well as anyone; but the director also knows how to handle big budgets. The same “From Dusk Till Dawn” costs a lot more – $19 million; and everyone’s favorite childhood hit “Spy Kids” – 35 million.
