According to Tolkien’s book descriptions, a rather unexpected picture emerges.
Fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy find it hard to imagine other actors in place of Elijah Wood, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom and all the others – the Hollywood stars fit the roles perfectly at first glance. But if Peter Jackson had followed the book canon, the film would have looked very different.
For example, John Tolkien described Frodo Baggins as a fairly strong hobbit with rosy cheeks, blond hair and a cleft chin, and he should also be taller than the rest of his brothers. Fans of the franchise fed the hero’s description into the neural network and got a real macho.

The rest of the characters underwent the same procedure, which allowed us to get the canonical “book” versions of the Lord of the Rings characters. And just look at Sam, who here looks nothing like the good-natured “mattress” from the films – here he is bold and handsome.

Boromir, played by Sean Bean, is of course good – it’s hard even for fans of the books to get to the bottom of it, but the neural network “saw” him as a handsome Hollywood man, somewhat reminiscent of… Orlando Bloom’s Legolas, if he were a brunette.

By the way, Legolas himself looked even younger in the books than he showed us in the films, and so his role in the ‘proper’ film adaptation should have been given to a teenage actor with blond hair.
Who knows, in Peter Jackson’s new film about Gollum we might see exactly the canonical heroes, whose appearance completely matches the descriptions from the books.
