Morgan Freeman is in impressive shape when it comes to prison, especially for her role in the acclaimed prison drama The Shawshank Redemption.
Most recently, the actor was behind bars and gave birth to some of the most incredible prison escapes in real life in his prison show, Great Escapes, which premieres in 2021.
Before becoming an on-screen prison expert, you might be surprised to learn that the actor has spent time in prison.
In 1955, Freeman joined the Air Force, where he trained as a repairman for automatic tracking radar.
During the shoot, the Million Dollar Baby star and his friend were hitchhiking to Los Angeles when police stopped them on the freeway.
When the police asked both of them for ID, Freeman was able to provide his, but quickly realized that his friend had left his Class A pass at his base.
While their stories were verified, the couple spent four days in jail, though Freeman was given the option to travel alone.
Volunteering
The legendary actor has been an active philanthropist for several years, supporting numerous charities and humanitarian causes around the world.
The Oscar winner has created several foundations, including the Tallahatchie River Foundation, which is committed to quality preschool education in the state of Mississippi.
The Grenada Relief Fund, renamed Plan! T in 2007, was also co-founded by actor Glory.
The charity was set up to provide support and funds to people affected by natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Hurricane Ivan in Grenada.
As a token of his love for animals, Freeman has regularly donated funds to support the Mississippi Animal Rescue League.
The funds were used to establish a new research area at Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine, which was named the Morgan Freeman Equine Reproduction Research Unit.
The 85-year-old has previously said he doesn’t see his efforts as a charity, but as something he should do.
The flop at the box office
Anyone who knows Morgan Freeman will remember him from a 1994 movie called The Shawshank Redemption.
In what is often considered the greatest film of all time, Freeman plays Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding, a Shawshank prison inmate.
In addition to playing one of the main roles, he is best remembered for his heartwarming narrative of the film, which was the first he told.
The Shawshank Redemption is IMDb’s top rated film and has been topping IMDb’s 250 Best Films for over 25 years.
Surprisingly, however, the film was considered a box office flop when it was released in 1994.
The film originally grossed $ 16 million (£ 12.7 million) on its first theatrical release, a figure completely eclipsed by its $ 25 million (£ 19.8 million) budget.
Many thought that, due to the film’s vague title, no one could accurately recommend it.
Speaking at Vanity Fair in 2014, Freeman said, “Nobody could say Shawshank Redemption. Your friends are like, ‘Oh man, I saw that movie, The … what was it? Shank, Sham, Shim? , anyway, great. ‘ Well, this isn’t selling you. “
Despite this, it received stellar ratings and was even crowned “the greatest film ever made” thanks to publications such as LADBible.
In 2020, the Now You See Me star tweeted: “It’s been 26 years since #ShawshankRedemption hit theaters and I’m forever grateful to everyone who made our box office one of the most loved movies ever.”
Family
In 1959, the Oscar-winning actress was having an affair with Loletha Adkins and she gave birth to Freeman’s first child, Alfonso, but the couple would split shortly after his birth.
The Golden Globe-winning star became a father for the second time in 1960, welcoming another son named Saifoulaye.
Details about Saifoulaye’s mother were never revealed and she chose a life out of the spotlight.
Freeman’s first major breakthrough came in 1967 when he joined the cast of Hello’s first all-African-American theatrical production, Dolly !, and the same year he married Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, with whom he remained until 1979.
During their marriage, the couple welcomed a daughter, Morgana, and Freeman also adopted Jeanette’s eldest daughter, Deena.
In 1984, the actor married costume designer Myrna Colley-Lee and they later adopted granddaughter E’dena, whom they raised together.
The couple have been married for more than three decades, but finalized their divorce in 2010.
