The Surrey-born actress, who has 2.8 million Instagram followers, said: “In 2019 to 2020, just before Bridgerton, I went through a breakup and I wasn’t looking after myself. ‘I was so hard on myself.’

It is unclear whether she described her anger over her breakup with Mr. Richardson, which supposedly took place in 2017, or her divorce from her eventual partner.

A friend of Mr. Richardson’s family said: “Everything was great for a few years.” We really thought they were on their way to getting married and having kids.

‘It was a serious relationship.’

The source said Miss Ashley quickly became “like family” but added: “The closer they seemed, the more Luke got cold feet.”

“In the end it came down to him not wanting to stay in LA. They did long distance for a while, but it didn’t really work.”

Mr. Richardson’s mother Margaret confirmed the romance, saying: ‘Simone has just started. She was a lovely girl. She came to our house.

“But I just think her career started – she had to go to America, so it was just one of those things. It wasn’t the right time for either of them.’

After the split, almost all social media posts linking to the couple were deleted.

She added: “I remember being told certain things as a child that made you really aware of the color of your skin.

“I remember watching Fair & Lovely [lightening] Cream – it smelled so good, like baby powder, but I didn’t understand what it was. Now I think: “Wow. It’s messed up.”

She recalls: “Looking back, I think the best thing I could have ever done was to leave home at such a young age.

“I’m so proud of my culture, but if I’m being completely honest, I grew up in a culture where men had more of a say than women.”

“I always resisted it. “I wanted to get my driver’s license, I wanted to play sports, I wanted to wear what I wanted.”

She said she was inspired to create it to create more equality and “take the wheel.”
