Britain’s leading film critics will present Colman Domingo with the inaugural Derek Malcolm Prize for Innovation at their upcoming awards ceremony.
The legendary critic and film historian Malcom died in August at the age of 91. The prize named after him will be part of the 44th editione The London Critics’ Circle Awards take place on February 4, 2024.
Domingo is known for his work as an actor, producer, writer, director and musician in a career spanning film, television and theatre.
He won an Emmy for his role euphoria and received a Tony nomination as producer of Thick hama retelling of hamlet. His recent film appearances include: The color purple And Quiet His other credits include appearances in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, Lee Daniels’ The Butler and Ava DuVernays Selma.
“It is an honor to receive the first Derek Malcolm Prize for Innovation and to be recognized in this way by the London Film Critics’ Circle, a group of journalists I deeply respect,” said Domingo. “It’s been an incredible year in cinema and it’s been a great privilege to play Bayard Rustin, a man who embodied the word ‘pioneer’.”
Malcolm was a longtime member of the Critics Circle and served one term as president. He was alternately chief critic of the British newspapers The Guardian and The Evening Standard and presenter The film club at the BBC and has also published several books. He is also a former director of the London Film Festival and a governor of the British Film Institute.
