Martin Scorsese joined a long list of accolades when he was honored at the 2023 WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards in New York City on Wednesday.
The 80-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker made his appearance a family affair as he joined his daughter Francesca Scorsese, 23, and wife Helen Morris, 76, who has been battling Parkinson’s disease since her diagnosis in 1990.
Scorsese was honored as the evening’s cinematic innovator, receiving the award just weeks after the release of his latest film, the western crime epic “Killers Of The Flower Moon.”
The director was also seen chatting with Timothée Chalamet, who joked during the veteran filmmaker’s launch that their first collaboration was not on one of his award-winning films, but on a Scorsese-directed Chanel ad.
Scorsese, who is also one of the most influential advocates for film preservation, looked dapper in a charcoal gray three-piece suit, which he paired with black patent leather shoes and a grey, white and black striped tie.

Francesca, herself an aspiring filmmaker, wore a sleeveless pocket dress with chic, punk black and white illustrations.
Her long blonde hair was pinned back at the ends as she rested on her shoulders and she wore bold eye shadow.
Francesca is best known to cinephiles (and TikTok users) for a series of hilarious videos she makes with her dad, poking fun at his knowledge (or lack thereof) of modern slang.
But the clips also offer him a new platform to defend the art of cinema, a passion he has now passed on to Francesca, the youngest of his three daughters from different marriages.
His wife Helen, who worked as a television producer, looked stylish in an all-white suit with large black buttons.
To get around with her family, she used a wheelchair and carried a black striped handbag on her lap.
Scorsese has worked with countless A-listers over his six-decade career, and on the red carpet he’s stood side-by-side with another, Timothée Chalamet.

Although Chalamet was at the ceremony to introduce the older artist, he also accompanied his girlfriend Kylie Jenner, who was honored with the Brand Award.
According to WSJ Magazine, Chalamet recently joked about working with Scorsese on one of his less prestigious projects.
“Marty and I worked together for the first time this year – not on the big American Western epic Killers Of The Flower Moon,” he said. “I’m in an ad he did for Chanel.”
According to the magazine, Scorsese highlighted how technological changes and advances have changed the film industry.
However, the director also warned that new technology is just a tool that should not become a crutch that limits creativity.
“The instrument itself would bring me nothing new,” he said. “I had to do it.”
Scorsese’s latest film, Killers Of The Flower, is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by David Grann, which describes the plight of the Osage Nation in the 1920s and 1930s.
After being pushed further west by the US government, the tribe eventually settled on dry land in Oklahoma. However, it turned out that the land was blessed – or cursed – with oil reserves, of which the Osage became owners thanks to the wording of the treaties that granted them the land.

The tribe’s members were the richest people in the world per capita after oil production began, but then they mysteriously began to die in large numbers, while others fell victim to shootings and even bombings when white members of the community who had previously been with the Osage intermarriage was. They killed them to collect their wealth and oil royalties. The eventual investigation into the murders led to the creation of the FBI.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays one of the conspirators who married and slowly poisoned Osage woman Molly Burkhart (played by breakout star Lily Gladstone). Scorsese’s other regular collaborator, Robert De Niro, appears as a wealthy cattle baron who helps orchestrate the plan to kill and steal from the Osage.
The film has received critical acclaim so far and has earned $87 million at the box office.
After the theatrical release, Killers Of The Flower Moon will be available to stream on Apple TV+.
