You can’t envy such a fate.
Women who ended up in a harem were often simply kidnapped from their homes, as happened to Hurrem from The Magnificent Century. The girls were held captive; they were not allowed to go outside and had no personal belongings. Their entire lives were subordinate to fulfilling the sultan’s wishes. Those whom the man chose as his wife were lucky, and many remained concubines until the end of their lives.
Pregnancy had no effect on living conditions. The building was cramped, dirty and damp. Not everyone could save the baby until birth. If the ruler was favorable to his mistress and unborn child, her position improved, but otherwise the concubine was treated like a dog. She often received blows from neighbors who were offended by life.
Due to a setback, the birth was attended by sisters. Many women died due to lack of basic medical care. The newborn was immediately removed from the mother and taken to the nurse; concubines were not allowed to breastfeed their children.
