in another world uncaught could be a drama series. Instead, the story is told in a half-hour comedy about a therapist and single mother whose life is turned upside down when her father gets out of prison and moves in with her and their teenage son.
The series is inspired by the life of creator Tracy McMillan. Speaking to Deadline’s Contenders TV panel on Sunday, McMillan said she wanted to “capture the tone of my real relationship with my father and son, who are kind of lively, happy people who like to laugh at ourselves.”
“I really wanted to capture that there is so much ease in the way we move through things. Of course there are all the other very intense feelings too, but we are not dark people in that sense. So I just felt that the show should reflect real life,” she said.
Series star Kerry Washington added: “This is what healing often looks like. When I think about the most traumatic moments in my life, when I get to the point where I can sit with loved ones and really laugh joyfully and compassionately about the things which has caused me the most pain, it is a sign of my Healing.”
Washington stars alongside Delroy Lindo, who plays her father in the series. Both are on their own healing journey that is anything but linear or easy. Washington said that’s what drew her to the role.
“As an actor, I’m not drawn to playing perfect people because nobody’s perfect. Part of what makes us human is that we’re flawed, messed up, and don’t always get it right. To me, the interesting thing about a character that he’s kind of messed up,” she said. “I think it’s a disservice to our culture if we think our therapists are perfect because they think it’s a conscious expectation of ourselves to be perfect, or trying to be perfect.” think being honest is more important and I think that’s what we’re trying to do on the show, which is to play honest people, real people. I love that everyone on the program is really, really imperfect, but also really trying to be the best version of themselves or each other in those relationships.
