‘Tulsa King’ star Jay Will on working with Sylvester Stallone and realizing he relates to his character – Contenders TV

Tulsa King Stars Jay Will, Garrett Hedlund and Max Casella attended Deadline’s Contenders TV event on Sunday to talk about their Paramount+ show and its star Sylvester Stallone.

The show follows famous mob don Dwight Manfredi (Stallone) who, upon his release from prison after 25 years, finds his empire has been dismantled and he must start over. Despite the setback, Manfredi settles in Tulsa, Oklahoma and finds new accomplices to start his new criminal organization.

Wills Tyson is one of the first characters Dwight makes contact with once he settles in Oklahoma and eventually becomes his confidant and business partner. During the panel discussion, Will explained what prompted him to take on a role in Taylor Sheridan’s sprawling television universe.

“It was honestly the level of kinship,” Will said. “Tyson reminds me not only of myself, but of a lot of young black men who grew up in the neighborhoods I’m from that aren’t really on this side or that, but more in between. I think his relationship with his father doesn’t really want him to delve too deep into the mafia lifestyle, but at the same time wants him to make a name for himself and find his own independence. [is relatable].”

The actor also credited his working relationship with co-star Stallone for keeping it realistic and grounded in the various scenes they had to act together. “[He] made it easy for me to just do my own thing and be myself. There were a few times he knew I would do things that were not my personal nature and he would say, “Yo, come on” when I forced or pushed him [myself in a way that didn’t fit the scenario]. He could see right through. And you always want to keep them close to those types of people.

Check back Tuesday for the panel video.
