Today it is exactly two months ago that the life of Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov changed forever. In January he was admitted to intensive care with pneumonia, and today he is in a serious condition with no positive prognosis for the future.
What happened?
The athlete began to cough during the New Year’s ice shows, but did not pay attention to it. According to Sport-Express, the 45-year-old figure skater developed breathing problems on January 10 and had to go to the hospital. By evening, Roman was placed in the intensive care unit for heart patients. He has been diagnosed with left sided pneumonia associated with influenza B. He is under medical anesthesia.
Two days later, doctors called Kostomarov’s condition stable and serious. First he was connected to a ventilator and then they performed the procedure of artificial blood saturation with ECMO oxygen – a treatment that uses an artificial heart and lung, because the skater’s own organs were too sick.

Deterioration
The infection in the skater’s body affected all blood vessels, Roman developed sepsis, which led to gangrene. There were problems with blood circulation, necrosis began in the left and right foot. The doctors had to perform an amputation: one foot was completely taken away, the other – partially.
This operation led to the next. It was decided to amputate several fingers.
After the amputations, the athlete suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and two small strokes, the doctors put him in an artificial coma.
Recently, information has appeared that sepsis is progressing, the athlete’s left hand turns blue. Doctors are still unable to stop the infection, the tissues of the hands and feet are still dying.
Predictions
In early March, Kostomarov began to periodically recover, but not for long. According to the Mash Telegram channel, he can only respond to simple commands – open his mouth and blink, and even then with difficulty. But there is no completely adequate contact. A psychologist will soon start working with him.
Next to Roman is constantly his wife, Olympic medalist Oksana Domnina. She closely monitors what the doctors are doing, finds out what kind of medicines they give her husband, asks not to make noise. Domnina sits next to the skater, talks to him or reads books to him.
No one gives accurate predictions about Kostomarov’s condition. It is only believed that after all he has been through, it is unlikely that he will be able to return to the big sport.
