Triangle of sadness. The nomination wasn’t just a great accomplishment for Dolly; it was historic as she became the first Filipina to be nominated in the category.

The 53-year-old actress said she cried when she learned of her nomination. “I was with friends and we were having dinner and the second we found out they ordered champagne and we celebrated,” she said. Dolly is already heading to the 80th annual Golden Globe as a winner, taking home the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Best Supporting Performance award at the December 2022 ceremony.

Dolly De Leon’s first professional acting was in 1991, according to IMDb, but her career really took off after her role in the Philippine primetime series, Greetings without obligation. Despite her 40+ acting credits, very little is known about Dolly. Read on to find out five things about the talented actress who was nominated for a Golden Globe 2023.

Dolly De Leon studied acting at the University of the Philippines

Dolly said she was first drawn to acting when she was in fourth grade and living in Manila, Philippines. She then she went to college and majored in acting. “I took it seriously in college. I took a performing arts class at the University of the Philippines and that’s where I really got into acting,” she said. Forbes in December 2022.

“From comedies, I started doing TV and some movies and played background characters up until recently,” she continued. “A little earlier triangle of sadness, that’s when I started getting better parts, better characters to play. Not so much as a supporting actor, but not even as a supporting actor. Talking characters, talking roles. It was after triangle of sadnesswhen we shot in 2020, that’s when I started playing more meaningful roles, more interesting characters.”

Dolly is a single mother of four.

Dolly raised four children as a single mother while working in her craft, but acting didn’t always pay the bills. Hence, she has worked a multitude of jobs over the years to support her family. “I think I’ve done all kinds of work. I was a cashier. I was an employee. I was babysitting. I’ve also done corporate work,” she said. Forbes. “I did public relations, I did media relations. I also facilitated training programs and team development. I sold insurance.

“I’ve done so many things because it’s really not easy being an actress in the Philippines,” she continued. “I don’t actually work a lot, and when I do, I don’t get paid very well. I have to find other ways to increase my income, but not have full employment because I wanted to continue acting.

And while she was always working, Dolly admitted that she didn’t always have the means to support her children. “I went through many difficulties. I borrowed money. I’ve been in debt. I’m hungry, I’ve been hungry for a long time,” she recalled. “There was a time when my son had to drop out of school because he couldn’t pay the tuition.”

Dolly said some people encouraged her to give up on her acting dreams so she could better support herself and her children, but she’s glad she didn’t. “I really didn’t want to stop acting. It’s really my passion and it’s something I really don’t want to give up. Thank God I never did because now the offers are getting better,” she said proudly. “I’m playing more exciting roles and it was really worth it. I have suffered for over 30 years in this profession. Thank God I stayed!”

In June 2021, Dolly shared a photo on her Instagram of her late father’s Philippine Navy ID card and wished him a Happy Father’s Day, describing how much he means to her. “My hero. The man who never let me down, never hurt me, never made me feel worthless or insignificant,” she began the sweet post. I always wonder what he’s doing, probably making God laugh and feeding God. The happy meals of the little angels. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I will always, always miss you.”

Dolly describes herself as shy.

During his conversation with ForbesDolly admitted it’s nothing like their breakup triangle of sadness character. “[Abigail is] brave, she is fierce, nothing will stop her. She takes the lead. She took the reins of her leadership from her without thinking twice or waiting for anyone’s approval,” she said. “I’m very shy. I am a very shy person. It’s hard for me to come out and defend myself.” However, she said she, like Abigail, has resources and could “definitely” survive if she gets lost on a remote island.

Dolly has a very creative wish list.

While Dolly’s career has simply skyrocketed in recent years, she has so much more to accomplish. “I have a wish list,” she said. Final deadline. “I’d like to work on a collaborative script where I can work together with the writer and director and really develop the character. I’d like to explore other schools of learning, other styles of directing. I would like to write, this is one of my dreams. I would like to write a screenplay or a series. I have so many ideas in my head that I just have to sit down and write them all down.”
