Tim Minchin has revealed the surprising formula for producing a hit musical following his massive Broadway success with Matilda and Groundhog Day.
The comedian, 47, said a film that can be successfully adapted into a stage musical should inspire some thought-provoking ideas.
“I don’t like most musicals. I can’t see it. What you want is a story with incredible conceptual underpinnings,” he told The Herald Sun.

He said part of what made his musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day so successful was that they were both based on films that explored philosophical ideas.
Groundhog Day has an incredible foundation: What is the meaning of life? To change the world, you have to change the way you see the world,” he said.
The Upright star added that his musicals have likable characters that audiences care about and are emotionally invested in.

Tim revealed earlier this year how he fulfilled his “lifelong dream” of working with Emma Thompson in the upcoming Matilda movie.
The Australian comedian composed the score for the remake of the 1996 Roald Dahl classic, starring Thompson as the head girl Miss Trunchbull.
“She just fell so much into this role,” he told 9Honey of the British Oscar winner.
“I don’t like most musicals. I can’t see it. What you want is a story with great conceptual underpinnings,” he said
“I was listening to her sing those songs and I was like, ‘You’re going to kill your voice,’ and she said, ‘Rahhhh.'”
“And I’ve loved her my whole life, so it’s so exciting.”
