Let’s face it, this strange question can arise after another story on the internet or after long hours of thinking in the shower. In our case, after a friend’s story. One evening she ran out of facial cleansing gel and didn’t have a new one yet, so she couldn’t think of anything better than using a personal hygiene product. And has been using this instead of cleanser for a few months now.
We have published a lot of materials about intimate cosmetics in the summer. Especially for her, we sent products of popular brands to an independent laboratory for research and then asked a chemist to evaluate how well the cleansing gels meet the needs of the intimate area. It turns out that manufacturers’ promises are not always confirmed by the composition of the products. Formulas of “sensitive” gels can be much more aggressive than indicated and can even harm the local microflora. Therefore, the question naturally arose whether it is possible to regularly wash your face with regular hygiene gel. We spoke to a dermatologist at DocMed and DocDeti clinics to find out.

Currently, there are no studies confirming or refuting the effectiveness of intimate hygiene products as facial skin care. Additionally, there is not a single scientific article that addresses this issue in general. However, there are articles on the internet and posts on social networks where girls share their experiences. But we will still follow the path of evidence-based medicine and try to understand this issue.
The main factor that plays a leading role in skin care is; – pH level.
The fact is that human skin has its own acid-base balance, which is often called pH. Moreover, the difference in pH value of the facial skin and the skin in the genital area directly affects the care products suitable for a particular area.

It is known that the pH value of the skin is 5.5 and the pH value in the genital area is between 3.7 and 4.5. It is these numbers that technologists take as a basis when developing care product formulas for a specific area. Then the question arises: why is there an opinion that intimate hygiene products are good for facial skin? Maybe they are less aggressive and cleanse the skin well? But it’s not that simple.
Due to the discrepancy between the pH of facial skin and the pH of personal hygiene products, the use of gels or foams can cause dryness, tightness, redness and irritation. on the skin of the face.
Therefore, while it is possible to wash your face with products that are not intended for facial care, on the other hand, this may cause skin problems in the long run.
