Four volunteer firefighters have suffered serious injuries in a road accident while traveling to combat a major wildfire in Arouca, Portugal, where more than 600 emergency personnel are battling three active fire fronts.
The crash occurred at around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday as the crew was heading to the operational area. Municipal officials confirmed the incident, and hospital sources later stated that all four firefighters, aged between 31 and 54, sustained severe multiple trauma.

Firefighter Injuries in Road Accident
The four crew members belong to the Arouca volunteer firefighter corporation. Medical teams evaluated their injuries as severe after their vehicle crashed during emergency dispatch operations.
As of 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Civil Protection officials reported that the fire maintained three active fronts across the municipality, located in the Aveiro district of northern Portugal. Two of the fronts, located on east-facing slopes, were burning with high intensity and significant activity, creating expectations of demanding overnight containment work.
Fire Fronts and Terrain Challenges
A third front was burning with lower intensity late Wednesday, with containment work progressing favorably. However, emergency services emphasized that local geography remains the primary obstacle facing ground crews.
Civil Protection sources noted that extremely rugged terrain and cliff faces have prevented firefighters from establishing direct access to the fire lines. The steep topography has also restricted the movement of operational teams and ground vehicles throughout the affected zone.
Emergency Deployment and Forest Damage
By 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the response involved 611 emergency personnel supported by 205 ground vehicles, according to official figures from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority website.
The wildfire originally broke out at 9:50 p.m. on Monday in Bouceguedim, a locality in the parish of Moldes. Civil Protection sources stated that the flames have burned 1,300 hectares of forest land. Despite the extensive destruction, local authorities confirmed that nearby villages remain out of danger.
Regional Context and Emergency Operations
Arouca is a mountainous municipality in northern Portugal known for its steep valleys and extensive forested areas. Regional firefighting in Portugal relies heavily on local volunteer corps working alongside national emergency services during summer wildland fire outbreaks.
The emergency in Arouca comes amid wider firefighting operations across the region. Nearly 1,250 personnel have been deployed to fight fires in Arouca, Torre de Moncorvo, and Santo Tirso, with crews in Arouca continuing intensive overnight operations on the two active eastern fronts.
