Sixteen aircraft flying to Moscow Vnukovo Airport were diverted to alternative airfields because of airspace restrictions, airport officials announced on their official Telegram channel on Wednesday, August 26.
Four of the diverted planes landed at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport and Moscow Domodedovo Airport, where passengers were disembarked and issued their luggage.
A passenger liner traveling from Istanbul that had been sent to Sheremetyevo has already returned to Vnukovo with its passengers on board, airport authorities said. Another group of diverted aircraft are awaiting refueling, after which they will proceed to their intended destinations.
Flight delays and passenger rights
Vnukovo press officials noted that while the late arrival of incoming aircraft could cause adjustments to the departure schedule, widespread flight cancellations or mass disruptions were not expected.
Airport management urged travelers to verify their flight status before setting off for the airport and to monitor official communications from their airlines.
Passengers were also reminded of their statutory entitlements during flight delays. Under aviation service standards, travelers subject to a delay of more than two hours must be provided with drinking water. If a delay exceeds four hours, airlines are required to supply passengers with hot meals and beverages.
Moscow aviation hub operations
Vnukovo International Airport is one of the four major commercial airports serving the Moscow metropolitan area, located approximately 28 kilometers southwest of the city center. It handles domestic routes across Russia as well as international services, notably busy corridor routes connecting Moscow with Istanbul and other Turkish destinations.
Sheremetyevo Airport and Domodedovo Airport, which received the diverted flights, are the two largest international gateways in the Moscow air hub, positioned to the north and southeast of the capital respectively.
The airspace restrictions follow operational disruptions earlier in the week. On Tuesday, August 25, Vnukovo Airport partially suspended its operations and handled incoming and outgoing flights only in coordination with relevant state authorities. The airport confirmed that it had resumed regular operations in normal mode on Wednesday, August 26.
