US Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has a lot of problems with you congressmen. And today you will hear about it.
Paul released his eighth annual online tribute to government waste as part of today’s Festivus celebration. His “Festivus Report” expresses grievances about alleged federal spending of $482,276,543,907, which he says is “a total waste of money.”
Festivus, for the uninitiated, was a non-commercial holiday invented by Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) based on the classic His field comedy TV series. Every December 23, Costanza rejects the crude commercialism built around the Christmas holiday for a Festivus dinner, an unadorned aluminum pole as an extra Christmas totem, and the annual “Airing of Grievances” followed by “Feats of Strength.”
The episode dubbed the holiday “a celebration for us all” and quickly became part of the cultural zeitgeist.
Paul included Costanza’s rejection of the status quo in his annual message, mocking the government’s waste.
The senator’s complaints in 2022 include:
- The National Institutes of Health spends $2.3 million to inject beagle puppies with cocaine
- Separately, the NIH is spending $187,500 to see if children like their pets.
- The Department of Health and Human Services spent $689,222 to investigate romances between parrots.
- The NIH has funded a $3 million annual research project to see how hamsters fight on steroids
- The US Census Bureau spent $2.5 million on Super Bowl advertising.
