A bad defeat. On October 30, 2021, Benoît Saint-Denis made his UFC debut. Against Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, the French were dominated by the Brazilians in a tough fight. The former special forces member, whose nose was broken, bows after three rounds with the unanimous decision of the judges. Only here, in March 2022, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos tested positive by the American anti-doping agency USADA. However, this decision, announced on September 22, should not change the outcome of the struggle that started a year ago between the two names.
Therefore, with a record marred by a defeat, Benoît Saint-Denis can no longer present himself as an undefeated fighter in the UFC. Nicknamed “God of War”, in a post on his Instagram account Tuesday, November 8, he pointed to the doping administration of the American establishment: “Brief description of my current status regarding my UFC debut. I agreed to fight against Elizeu Zaleski, top 15 middleweights in Abu Dhabi. USADA tested my competitor positive for ostarine, which is a big plus for everyone, I’ll let you check how good it is. This test took place between two fights, 6 months after our fight. So, he uses it to prepare away from battle, but it’s also easy to hide from control. We got suspicious and after our fight I knew he was taking anabolics. In my country, if you’re caught less than a year after a fight, you’re disqualified.“
Following his message, Benoît Saint-Denis drew attention to the enormous consequences a defeat can have on his career: “We risk our health in every fight, in this fight we break our noses and take a lot of damage. Punishing a mistake seems normal to me. Losing a fight in MMA you lose half of your wallet, you can’t be sure of keeping your contract, your popularity will take a hit… I don’t care if I lost my invincibility, which everyone trusted, but apparently it’s a big plus for marketing. (…) If we do not punish cheating in our sport, it is difficult to fight it.“After all, the Frenchman assures that he is not angry with Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos:”I’m not mad at Elizeu, it comes from a time when there was no anti-doping agency.“
