Colin Farrell opened the script of Batman: Part IIand according to him, fans are in for something special. The actor, who plays Gotham crime boss Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, couldn’t stop praising the director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin they made for the highly anticipated sequel.
Farrell shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he was promoting his new Netflix film Ballad of a little player. During their chat, Farrell revealed that he recently read the full script and later spoke about it at length with Reeves.
“I had so many thoughts and feelings to share with Matt about the script. I really think it’s a masterpiece. Kind of a contemporary genre masterpiece. It’s so brilliant and Robert [Pattinson] has such a beautiful journey to continue and engage the audience.
Before diving into the script, Farrell admitted he had to prepare mentally. “It’s dense,” Farrell said of the script. “It’s really, really smart. It’s so detailed.”
The actor said he waited about two weeks before finally sitting down with a cup of tea and reading it cover to cover in just two hours. His reaction afterwards? Pure admiration.
“It’s really extraordinary. I think he’ll make an extraordinary film.”
Batman: Part II continues Reeves’ gritty, no-nonsense vision of Gotham City, which began with the 2022 film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Farrell will once again step into the role of the Penguin, a part he also reprized in the HBO Max spin-off series. The Penguin.
Farrell recently revealed that the events of Batman: Part II will take place just “a few weeks after” the conclusion of that series, keeping the story closely tied to Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga.
Active production Batman: Part II will begin in spring 2026, with Reeves returning to direct. The sequel is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
With Farrell calling the script a “masterpiece” and describing it as “dense” and “intelligent,” fans can expect a bold, layered continuation of the world that Reeves has built.
