This is a very personal project for Amy Schumer. The writer is the lead character, executive producer and directing several episodes. How was the selection process? What first caught your attention in this younger version of Beth?
Young Violet: I mean, what really interests me is that I haven’t read many of the characters like him at auditions yet. Just being a girl and trying to find your place in the world, I also felt really connected to her in terms of developing friendships and school dynamics and developing a dynamic family life at home. So I really connected with most of his experiences, just his values and upbringing. I feel like I have a lot to pull off. It was super fun to play.
Did you know that if you walk in this will be a younger version of Amy Schumer?
Young Violet: I knew she was the younger version of Amy. I panicked a little and was definitely a little nervous. I couldn’t be more grateful to have this role.
How was your first meeting with Amy when you got the role?
Young Violet: Lord, I remember the last time I called and he hugged me tightly. It was just before I shot my scene. You just felt all the love radiating from him and I felt really comfortable. Working with him on set was a dream. I couldn’t be more lucky. It was great.
This was a project with all hands on deck. How was your relationship with him as a director?
Young Violet: Oh my god, like the fate of directors. He is wonderful and very thoughtful.

Beth is central to the series and retraces the sometimes very complex ups and downs of her childhood. Was there a scene that particularly challenged you, or was it a scene that you can hardly remember to photograph?
Young Violet: Beth definitely had a lot of moments, she just had a hard time on the show. I think the big fight with his dear friend was pretty tough because it’s something a lot of people can relate to and it’s sad. It was definitely tough and it was his experience in school. It’s definitely hard to recreate those moments. Sometimes you go through this crescendo, so it’s definitely hard to imagine, but I’m so excited for people to see it. Hopefully, this will make people feel a little less lonely.
You’re the same age as the young Beth on the show. When you play with her, have you noticed that you have had similar experiences or have had or felt the same as Beth?
Young Violet: Absolute. It’s set in the 90s, but for now, she’s well known for her high school experience and family dynamics, making friends, making friends, and nurturing those relationships. It’s weird playing a character when you’re feeling all this on your own. It’s definitely weird, but it’s kind of healing, perfect and wonderful.
You work hard with Laura Benanti and Michael Rapaport, who play Beth’s parents. What was this experience like?
Young Violet: They’re both so great and wonderful and just great actors and people. It’s crazy that I can even work with them. Laura is a mom, so that’s really cool. I felt like I was his second child. They were super kind and super loving. It was really fun to dive into these relationships as young Beth represents her relationships with her parents and sister. Diving was really fun and I had a great co-star. Lily [Fisher], playing my little sister. He’s so cute. It couldn’t be more fun.

Meanwhile CV and Beth What did you learn from Amy that you always carry with you?
Young Violet: He’s just one of the nicest people and the way he used the set was so inspiring. I think I’ve learned to grow up and see other people on set and someone who really makes you feel special, which is great. I definitely learned a lot about behavior and work ethics on set. He’s just an all-around great person. I definitely learned a lot from him.
