Anne Heche’s eldest son, Homer, speaks out after his mother’s untimely death.
After PEOPLE confirmed his death on Friday, the 20-year-old expressed his sadness at an emotionally difficult time for his family.
“Atlas lost my sister and mother,” she said in a statement she shared with PEOPLE. “After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness. I hope my mother will recover from the pain and begin to discover what I love to imagine as her eternal freedom.”
The young man then shares his gratitude to those who sent him love.
“Thousands of friends, family members, and fans have told me their hearts during these six days,” he continues. “I am grateful for their love as well as the support of my father Coley and stepmother Alexi, who have remained my rock during this time.”
“Rest in peace mom, I love you,” he added.
Anne Heche was the mother of Homer, with whom she was with her ex Coley Laffoon, and 13-year-old Atlas, whose father was James Tupper.
“Today we lost a shining light, a kind and cheerful spirit, a loving mother and a devoted friend,” said a representative of the actress on behalf of Anne Heche’s family and friends.
“Mother will be greatly missed, but her beautiful sons live on through her iconic work and passion for advocacy,” the statement said. The courage to always stand up for the truth and spread the message of love and acceptance will continue to make a lasting impression.
Additionally, the representative confirmed that Heche’s heart was still beating, despite being legally dead under California law. He was not disconnected to allow time for the OneLegacy Foundation to find suitable recipients to receive his organs.
On August 5, the actor was involved in two car accidents in the Los Angeles area. It first crashed into the garage of an apartment but escaped, then crashed into Lynne Mishele’s home, rendering it uninhabitable as it burst into flames.
The actress suffered burns in the fire and was taken to a local hospital, where she was intubated.
His chances of survival were almost nil.
