With the war in Ukraine raging for more than a month, many Ukrainians have left the country for safety.
They lost their home overnight and their families were torn apart.
Thousands of refugees seeking safety in Poland, Moldova or Romania now face an uncertain future. According to the UN, millions of people have fled Ukraine. Some countries, such as France, organize to welcome exiles.
Some, however, decided to face the danger of returning to Ukraine, despite the threat of shooting and bombing. This is the case of these two sisters, aged 67 and 71, whom the Daily team met.
One explains: “I usually work in a nursery. And classes continue next Monday. I have to work!”
The journalist then asks him why he left Ukraine a few weeks ago. His sister speaks later: “There were fires! And the bombardments! We were so scared. We also came here with our grandchildren. They are 10 years old, we leave them here in Romania, but we come back,” he said.
They return to Ukraine because their city has survived the war, but they are traumatized by the war: “When they shoot and kill people, it’s really terrible! But what we want is to help our country even a little bit.”
Recall that on March 17, 2022, the UN reported that at least 700 civilians were killed. On the same day, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine announced that 108 children have been killed in Ukraine, 52 of them in the Kyiv region, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of this country.
The European Union, Amnesty International and Interpol are concerned about the “enormous risk” of human trafficking, and particularly of Ukrainian migrant children, who represented half of the 3.3 million refugees on 21 March 2022.
