“American Idol” is going on “Golden Ticket Road” to promote its new season on ABC

We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore: american idol decided to change the way it markets the new season by having judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacrest drive down the proverbial Yellow Brick Road to kick off season 22.

Sorry, that’s what we mean Golden ticket road.

In this latest promo for the series’ February 18th return, Perry dons a Dorothy-esque outfit as a narrator says, “Once upon a time there were four superstars who took a long journey far from home. ” Seacrest invites them and then hits the Golden Ticket Road looking for the “best singers in America”. They pass Burleson, Texas, the hometown of season one winner Kelly Clarkson, along with Checotah, Oklahoma, the hometown of Carrie Underwood, and more.

“What an incredible journey,” said Richie. “I see better things in the future.”

Once they reach Hollywood, it’s Seacrest who makes the predictable statement: “Somewhere over the rainbow, a star is born.”

Casting for season 22 began in the fall. The show is produced by Fremantle and 19 Entertainment, part of Sony Pictures Television. Executive producers include Megan Wolflick, who also serves as showrunner, and Fremantle’s Jennifer Mullin, with Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman serving as executive producers for 19 Entertainment. Fremantle distributes the series worldwide.
