The Christmas Message of King Charles III. Ncuti Gatwa’s debut crowned Doctor whowhich dominated the UK ratings charts on 25 December.

The King’s Christmas Broadcast, the monarch’s annual address to the British people, attracted more than 6.5 million viewers, according to official figures from nights.tv. BBC1 accounted for the majority of viewing figures (5.2 million), with BBC2 (572,000), ITV (685,000), ITV3 (89,000), Sky News and GB News, as well as ITV1’s +1 channel also joining the contributed in total. Including daytime viewing figures, the total was around 7.5 million, while BBC1 brought in 5.9 million.

The broadcaster wasted no time in pointing out its success, noting that BBC1’s 27% share was more than double that of its nearest competitor, its best since 2019, and “also bigger than the entire SVOD market combined was on TV on Christmas Day.”

BBC1’s Christmas Eve gig was also said to be its best broadcast share since 2013.

“Viewers care about bringing people together at Christmas and securing nine of the top ten shows shows how much they value the BBC’s Christmas programmes. We entertained millions of viewers on Christmas Day with a range of high-quality programs you won’t find anywhere else, to round off an outstanding year of creative content at the BBC.”

King Charles used his speech to promote compassion for others, saying his heart was “warmed by countless examples of the imaginative ways people care for one another.”

And it wouldn’t be a Charles speech if the monarch didn’t discuss his most passionate subject: environmental protection.

“I am very happy to see the growing awareness of how we need to protect the earth and our natural world as the only home we all share,” he said.
