A lawsuit in Florida that was the subject of the Netflix documentary Take care of Maya saw his accusers demand a new trial.
Two weeks ago, a jury awarded Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital $261 million in damages. According to court documents, 10-year-old Maya Kowalski was falsely detained and abused by the medical team at All Children’s Hospital, which contributed to the suicide of her mother, Beata Kowalski.
Attorneys for All Children’s filed a new lawsuit Wednesday. Their motion alleges that the jury foreman violated strict rules of conduct during the trial.
Take care of Maya was viewed nearly 14 million times within two weeks of its release in June.
Lawyers for the hospital claimed juror Paul Lengyel shared information about the case with his wife during the trial. She in turn shared it on social media platforms. Yolanda Lengyel also attended at least one day of the trial in Venice. This means that she was aware of conversations between the lawyer and the judge that took place outside the presence of the jury.
During the trial, Yolanda Lengyel frequently posted YouTube feeds of the trial and in a Facebook chat group that largely supported the Kowalski family. She also allegedly revealed questions her husband wanted to ask witnesses, as well as the contents of a jury note sent during deliberations.
Jurors were instructed not to talk about the case or read media coverage of the trial. The motion for a new trial also calls for an investigation into Lengyel to uncover further possible wrongdoing.
Nick Whitney, one of the attorneys representing the Kowalski family, said they will file a response Monday at 4 p.m. He declined further comment.
