Former SAG-AFTRA President Melissa Gilbert issued a SAG-AFTRA message asking members not to dress up as characters from affected companies on Halloween.
SAG-AFTRA posted a message on its website urging its members to “celebrate Halloween this year while continuing to show solidarity.” The guild recommended notable actors “choose costumes inspired by common characters and characters,” including a “ghost, a zombie, a spider, etc.” or “Characters from unreleased content such as an animated TV show.”
Gilbert was outraged by the suggestions.
“Is this what you came up with? “Literally no one cares what anyone wears for Halloween,” Gilbert wrote on Instagram. “I mean, do you really think such a childish thing will end the strike? We look like a joke. Please tell me you will repeal this rule… and start negotiating!”
Gilbert directly tagged the Instagram accounts of current SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
“For God’s sake, people are suffering immensely and that’s what you have to say… come on people… This is the kind of senseless nonsense that keeps us on strike. ‘Let’s pursue policies that make us look petty and incompetent at the same time.’
Gilbert led the actors union from 2001 to 2005.
