1906. A dashing officer falls in love with a young Viennese, but has an affair with a baroness whose husband is very jealous. Their relationship has been going on for a year, and Franz, fed up with it, shows a brutal lack of affection towards his mistress.
In June 1958, at the Boulogne studios near Paris, where director Pierre Gaspard-Huit set up the set, the actor was introduced to his 22-year-old partner, Alain Delon. First impression is disastrous. Romy Schneider writes in her diary: “Too handsome, too well-groomed. I didn’t find the whole thing unappealing and the boy uninteresting.” But Romy’s heart capsizes from the first scenes where Delon looks gorgeous in his uniform as a dragon lieutenant. They got engaged on March 24, 1959.
Our review: If we’re a long way from Max Ophuls’ beautiful 1932 adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s play, this variation on the bluette mode is not without its charm. Like her cast, Alain Delon, and Romy Schneider, whose love story begins on set. (Rating: 1/4)
