Le Mans 66 (France 2) – Matt Damon: "I knew nothing about car racing"

ARCHIVE. In Le Mans 66, a thrilling behind-the-scenes fresco from 24 Hours, the 1966 actor represents the iconic Carroll Shelby. We met with the actor in 2019 when the movie was released.

Were you a car racing fan?

Matt Damon: I didn’t know anything about it. I grew up in Boston and motorsport is not part of the city’s culture. But the scenario is not limited to cars.

Above all, a story of friendship, courage and passion…

The movie is about two men who come together to do something big. Beating Ferrari at Le Mans was their obsession. I knew nothing about the friendship of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles: It’s a great story. As a former pilot, Shelby admired Miles’ endless talent behind the wheel… and acknowledged his lack of diplomacy as a friend. Years later, in an interview, Shelby still spoke fondly of him.

Tell us about your collaboration with Christian Bale…

He’s great. Christian is one of my favorite actors. I’ve watched all of his movies and I have to admit that I’m very curious to see his creative process up close. I was struck by his generosity, kindness, humility: it almost makes me think of a monk. He has admirable discipline. She lost 8 kilos for the role. Fresh fruit was served to us every day to withstand the heat of around 45°C. The team pounced on him, and Christian was always saying, “I’m trying to lose weight, get out!” When he could have said that, he refused with perfect friendship. »

Christian plays a great dad. What is it to be a good father?

I have four daughters, so I think about this a lot. I was lucky to have a wonderful father. When we had to make a decision with my brother, we always thought of him, we admired him very much. I hope my kids can say that about me too.

At 49, what are you most proud of?

From my children without hesitation.

What does the NGO Water.org, which you created with Gary White in 2009, represent for you to help poor people access drinking water and toilets?

It is a very important part of my life today. Despite the lack of resources, we have helped 22 million people to date. Our microcredit program works: the repayment rate is 99%. We keep moving forward, this project saves lives. I will be in the Philippines with my 13 year old daughter in November. I took the eldest one to Indonesia with my niece. It is important not only to show young people their dream places, but to open them to the realities of the world.

Everything seems to be smiling at you. What is Matt Damon dreaming about?

I love my job and want to continue, but even though everything looks perfect from the outside, I know it is an uncertain profession. I took two years off: I took care of my sick father and needed time after his death. Until now, almost all I knew in life was work. I want to travel less, enjoy all the pleasures of life and devote myself to various projects.
