BBC apologizes for filming presenter Amol Rajan in taxi without seatbelt

EXCLUSIVE: The BBC has issued an apology after airing a documentary filming presenter Amol Rajan in the backseat of a taxi without a seatbelt.

The documentation, How to crack the ceiling in the classroomaired last December and about 11 minutes later shows Rajan bringing a bit into the camera from the back of a taxi.

It can be clearly seen that the presenter is not wearing a seat belt, which is against the law in the UK when the safety device is in place.

The BBC said: “During the making of this programme, the presenter was filmed driving a taxi without wearing a seat belt. It was a mistake for which we apologize.”

Rajan is seen traveling around London in the clip. The Metropolitan Police website says people can be fined up to £500 ($606) for not wearing a seat belt.

The police have been contacted for comment. Rajan has also been contacted for comment.

The BBC’s apology comes two months after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was fined by police for not wearing a seat belt. It follows Sunak’s team posting a video on social media showing the Lancashire Premier not wearing his security gear. Downing Street spoke of a “short lapse of judgement”.

Rajan is one of the BBC’s most talked about presenters. He presents that of Radio 4 Today Show, the flagship breakfast news show, and is the new host of Challenge University, one of the longest-running quiz shows on British television. He will be paid up to £330,000.
