SAG-AFTRA is saddened by the killing of Orlando TV reporter Dylan Lyons, who has been a member of the guild since 2012. Lyons was shot and killed Wednesday while covering another shooting. Photojournalist Jesse Walden, his colleague at Spectrum News 13, was injured but recovered. The man suspected of killing two others, including a 9-year-old girl, in the shooting is in custody.
“We are saddened and saddened by the killing of Orlando journalist Dylan Lyons, who was shot at the behest of a previous shooting,” the guild said in a statement. “As the union representing broadcast journalists, we honor their work and recognize their exceptional contributions to our communities.
“Journalists like Dylan and photojournalist Jesse Walden, who were injured in the shooting, play a special role in our society by reporting on events and issues in our communities. The events of last night are a sad reminder of the dangers journalists face every day.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of Dylan and Jesse and the family of 9-year-old T’yonna Major, who was tragically killed in the same incident at a nearby home.”
